Well, when we bought our unit @ BR, there were many considerations which we both listed - HIGH FLOOR, AIRY, SPACIOUS, CLEAN (as we were looking for resale), NEARBY TO PARENTS, DESIGNER INTERIOR (yes, we were delusional, you can't blame us THE 1st time HDB flat buyer) and most importantly CHEAP.
Now, fast forward few years down the road and two kids later, we have a decent home- HIGH FLOOR, AIRY, SPACIOUS, CLEAN (as good as it gets for a resale flat which is about nearly 20 years old), NEARBY TO PARENTS (mine at least), DESIGNER INTERIOR (not really but it's ok cos of the following criteria it meets) and CHEAP (yup $300K and only $5k cash upfront).
So we thought, we are well and good.
Not until we realise that.. our boy is in Nursery 2 this year and is on the way to enter into the dreaded primary-schooling age.
Lo and behold, for those uniniated what it's like to get through the various phases of the Primary One registration here in Singapore -
"Places in the school are allocated accordingly to the order of priority laid out in the
various phases of the Primary One Registration Exercise
. There will be balloting amongst the applicants if the number of applications to a school exceeds the number of vacancies available in any of the phases from Phase 2A(1) to Phase 2C Supplementary.
The remaining places in each school at the end of Phase 2A(2) will be allocated equally to Phase 2B and Phase 2C. If the number of qualifying applicants in Phase 2B exceeds the places available, the outcome will be determined first by proximity category of residence to the school and then by ballot. Any places not taken up during Phase 2B will be added to the places allocated for Phase 2C."

To get to your school of choice and if that means the Top #$%%% Primary School in Singapore, it means the following:
- One of the parent, better be an old boy or an old girl (why does this sound crass); or
- Stay within the 1km radius of the school; or
- Have a sibling who is already attending the school; or
- Again either parent is a staff member in the school;
- One can volunteer minimum 40 hours in your school of choice.
Since both hubster and my primary school have been razed to the grounds to make way for new schools by the Ministry, both of us are certainly not teacher-material and RH is our 1st kid, hence no older siblings, this automatically place RH in the one of lower-rung categories - Category 2C (which is like your two phases before the end of the phases).
For those brave, confident and none-at-all-kiasu parents, they may not care and say, well it's just a primary school and the kids will get by. All and good but me, the paranoid me, just wants to have a little control over where I place my child, my firstborn to school and whether it all works out for the future, well let him be the maker of his destiny as I would have already tried my darndest best to provide him the best could just by sheer location.
So now what do I do?
It's two years away, this whole P1 registration process and things may change. So do I leave it to chance?? Heck it and subscribe to the mantra, "He will be fine".
NAY... I will just download that volunteer form first.... (smiles sheepisly)
